5 ways to make more time to read

Michael Hyatt:

Sacrifice something. You’ve got 24 hours in a day. You spend 8–10 hours (hopefully not much more) working. You spend 6–8 hours sleeping. You’ve got family and friends to spend time with every day. All of this doesn’t leave much time for other interests, like reading. So your golf game, like mine, might take a hit. You might have to turn off the television after 9:00 p.m. But, if reading is a priority, you’ll make time for it. As Jon Acuff puts it: “Be selfish at 5 a.m.”

This was my preferred option recently when I realised it was halfway through the year and I’d only read a handful of books.

First thing to go was my Xbox 360. I know, I know. What’s a clever clogs like me doing with a games console at the age of 30? Well, I grew up playing games and tinkering with computers. I also work for a company who makes online learning games, so there’s a tie in there too. And yes, I quite enjoy it.

The point is, I decided the Xbox had to go because, let’s face it, reading is more important. I’ve also been going to bed half an hour to an hour earlier to give myself some extra reading time.

As a result, I’ve probably read twice the number of books in the last couple of months compared to the previous six or seven. And you what? It feels great.
