AL Kennedy on writing and procrastination

Great article on procrastination by AL Kennedy on the Guardian website today. This is the bit that resonated with me the most:

Robert Louis Stevenson once said that he didn’t like writing, he liked having written. And I think I know how he felt. The act of writing is delightful, once you’ve entered into the proceedings, it’s simply that – like many other intimate, involving and tiring activities – writing creates nervousness, fumbling and an intense desire to run away before it can really take a hold.

I don’t think I’m alone in finding the most difficult part of writing the actually starting to write. I can procrastinate with the best of them, even when I know that I really should get down to work and start, you know, typing. And it’s such a stupid thing, because when I get going, an hour can pass in the blink of an eye.

I also have a close affinity with kettles. Read the whole of Kennedy’s article to see what I mean.
