Change is in the air

31 March 2011

Some exciting news: Write for Your Life is now a different type of website. Where yesterday it was a magazine-style blog with one or two updates a week, from now on it will include an extra type of post: the link post.

Curating the web

A link post is when the post title links to a different website in a you-should-definitely-check-this-out kind of a way. The link is typically followed by a choice quote and then a response or commentary.

I’ve been curating like this on my other site, Broomeshtick, for a while, and I’ve really enjoyed it. Actually, I’ve already talked about the changes over there:

…all this loveliness does mean that I’m effectively maintaining two sites at once, both about writing. The more I’ve thought about it, and especially as life gets more hectic and time precious, it makes sense to combine the two websites. And so that’s what I’m planning to do.

I’ll still be posting articles, episodes and the podcast, it’s just that they’ll be interspersed with the new link posts. I might also post shorter, announcement-like entries like this, which will appear the same as link posts, but without the arrow and link away from the site. Essentially though, what you’ll get is more content.

In fact, you might have noticed a new ‘Interviews’ category in the menu too. We’re speaking to some really great people, starting tomorrow with Jean O’Brien, winner of the Arvon International Poetry Award.

Information for subscribers

For those who read the site via a feed reader, note that link posts will have an arrow next to the title (just like they will on the site itself). All other posts will appear exactly as they’ve always done.

If you currently receive updates via email, I’ll be posting most weekdays, so you’ll get more emails. That might sound like a good thing (hooray!), but if you think it might become too much, I highly recommend you try using a feed reader. If you’re not sure what that means, check out this great plain English explanation. Honestly, it’s like magic.

Finally… thank you!

I would just like to say a huge thank you to all of you who read and engage with Write for Your Life. The site’s come a long way over the last couple of years and it’s been great to get such fantastic support. I really, really appreciate it.

Hmmm, how come no comments on a link post? No worries, thanks for the link to my RSS article…

Hi Anne and thanks for the comment.

The idea behind the link posts is to point readers towards other people’s content, typically with additional commentary from me. If I’m not the person who created the initial content, it seems right that I encourage folks to go to that content and carry on talking there.

      That’s the theory!
