Excellent article, Iain! I especially loved the alliteration of pace, pitch, pause. . . and writing everything down on paper. How many times that one line scribbled on a scrap of paper made the difference! At the top of my notes I draw a smile, a laugh, and a pair of eyes that remind me to: Think friendly, think funny, make eye contact

Iain - sorry about the typo in your name in my last comment. It's 1:45 AM here in Vancouver and I am obviously not typing straight. :)

Gosh Ian, thanks for packing so much into this article. That pitch technique that newscasters use is great. I can't wait to try it. Just trying it now at my computer feels awkward, but I imagine the more you practise in front of people the easier it gets.

@Seth Hi Seth and thanks for your comment. As I've mentioned on Write for Your Life elsewhere, I'm currently editing my novel one last time before my agent starts talking to publishers.

While I've naturally done most of the editing on screen, all the planning (of which there was loads) has been done with Post-it notes and a biro.

I take this approach a lot these days, much more than I used to. And it works! So much so, I might well be sharing said system in an electronic book some time in the nearish future!

Truly useful advice that I can take home and directly put to use.

I often outline ideas on paper before writing the substantial content on my computer. I know that's not perfectly within the bounds of your recommendation but I can vouch for usefulness of the process. Going from brain to paper then from paper to typed draft activates more of my senses and gives me additional opportunities to clarify ideas and solidify notions.

Thank you Rex!
