Who reads for you?
Randy Murray:
I don’t care if you’re a “blogger”, a poet, a novelist, or someone who writes marketing copy. You need a reader. You need someone who is your model, someone who you are writing specifically for. Without this idea of who you’re writing for you might find that you’re writing just for yourself, or worse, for no one at all.
I think about this all the time, for both my fiction and for this very website. Naturally, as a professional copywriter, I think about who might be reading that work too – in fact, it’s kind of the point.
It isn’t always easy though. Sometimes, you can get lost in what you’re doing and end up writing without any kind of focus. Part of being a good writer is recognising when that’s happening (or is about to happen) and finding a way to get back on track.
