Two writing opportunities from literary agency, Tibor Jones & Associates

This is the first post that fits into a new category of posts here on Write for Your Life. Typically, posts are either articles, episodes or a podcast, but this new breed are more like editorials or recommendations. They’re me pointing you towards things I think you should know about.
And it gives me great pleasure to kick off with two fantastic writing opportunities from Tibor Jones & Associates, the very same literary agency that represents my own novel.
The first is a new prize for unpublished novelists and the second is the Writers’ Studio, a scheme for writers that gives them exclusive access to and advice from industry professionals.
Below you’ll find more information about both opportunities and links through to the Tibor Jones website for the full lowdown. Having worked with Sophie, Kevin and the team on my own writing, I can heartily recommend the experience.
So read on, check that you and your writing fit the bill, and get your work ready for submission.
Pageturner Prize
This is really is a great opportunity and although Tibor Jones are based in the UK, entry is open to all writers, wherever you are. Just make sure your novel is written in English.
Here’s the meat of it:
The Tibor Jones Pageturner Prize was born out of a desire to discover and promote new and exciting writers, to celebrate compelling new voices in fiction.
Entrants for the prize must have completed, or be close to completing, a novel. The fiction can embrace any genre, the story and the writing should be distinctive, absorbing and, above all, Pageturning.
The winner will receive representation plus £1000, and will be announced at the 2011 London Book Fair.
What are you waiting for? Head on over to find out more about the Pageturner prize from Tibor Jones.
Writers’ Studio
I know from completing an MA Writing course that the most valuable lessons come from those who live and breathe publishing on a daily basis. Writers’ Studio give writers the unique chance to learn from industry professionals.
More info here:
The scheme will run over the course of three months and will include three one to one sessions with an agent/ script editor, as well as two group sessions with agents, award winning and bestselling authors, editors and scriptwriters.
The best candidates will be considered for representation by Tibor Jones & Associates. What will set the scheme apart is that all aspiring authors and screenwriters will have a friend in the industry they can learn from.
The group sessions will take place close to the Tibor Jones office in Brixton (London). The total cost for the three month scheme will be £500.
Candidates should already have completed a screenplay or a novel or a nonfiction project.
And there you have it. You can find out more about Writers’ Studio, including how to apply, over at the Tibor Jones website.
You can also follow Tibor Jones on Twitter, if you like. And feel free to use the comments section below to ask questions, of course.

Thanks for this Ian, this might just reboot the lazy sloth that is my writer hard drive.
It’s true that sometimes we writers need a big fat target to kick ourselves
back into action. Good luck!
Nice! I’m so excited to see more posts like this, Iain. Love the blog by the way – found you through FUEL.
Looking forward to more from you.
Hi Christopher – and welcome!
Thank you for the kind words and I’m glad you liked the post. You might want to look out for our upcoming membership scheme too, where this sort of thing will be commonplace. Also, I post daily recommendations and links to great articles on my other site: http://broomeshtick.com
Sell over! And again, welcome!
Iain, Great blog! Thanks for the helpful information. Peace.
thanks for the heads up, Iain. been beavering away at it. trying to finish by the of the month. it says you can be ‘almost finished’. what you think that means? I’m done with the whole story, more or less, but working on redrafts. you think 3/4 of the final draft or then the rest(marked) as ‘work in progress will do?
Hi Kaimani,
Sophie here from Tibor Jones. We just didn’t want to exclude authors who have almost finished. 3/4′s polished and the last portion as a work in progress is absolutely fine, just make it clear that is the case in your email. We’ll look forward to reading…
